Hey Guys,
Just wanted to let you all know about a new frog just in from O.S.P. called the skating frog.
It’s summer. The weeds are thick and the frogs are out in force. Bass are boiling, slapping, and cartwheeling at your favorite Spro or Sumo. Aarg!! I guarantee you’ll fish your frog with the mindset that the Bass have to get it sooner or later. Twenty vicious blow ups later and you start thinking, “I’ll start pitching to them after they blow up.” That doesn’t work. You just keep throwing back at them wondering why they won’t come back. You can’t give up on it. It’s just part of frog fishing.
I just wanted to let you know that I was not on the water watching you go through this scenario last weekend. I was experiencing the phenomenon myself at an FLW event on The Mississippi. Fishing a tournament, I found myself questioning my abilities as a slop angler. With only two hours left to fish, I dumped my frog box out on the deck. I stared at it as if I where waiting for one to call out to me. Nothing screamed,”Pick Me!” I remembered while on my pre-tournament shopping trip I picked up an O.S.P. skating frog. It was different from the rest; this frog was smaller but only 2 grams less in weight. This frog had a single skirt and it was silver in color with a welded tying ring to help with walking. This bait spoke to me. All of a sudden, it hit me, ”they are after shad in the grass, not frogs!” The Skating Frog spoke and I listened. This bait has a split personality; when it was in the grass, it was a frog. When this bait emerged from the grass into open water, it was a defenseless shad scooting from side to side. The bass didn’t know what hit them. I caught twenty plus fish in an hour and a half, three of them were over 3 lbs. Even though I didn’t win the tournament, there was a lesson to be learned. The moral of this story is to make those small changes. The bonus is I have now added the Skating Frog to my arsenal.
If you can learn one thing from this blog, may it be this; when a frog talks to you, listen! Just don’t tell anyone…
‘Till next time, I’m JD and that is my blog.
